No bar to Adam Tamizi’s release from prison now, lawyer says

The High Court has granted bail to Haque Group Chairman Adam Tamizi Haque in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act (CSA).

The bench of Justice Md Iqbal Kabir and Justice Md Aktaruzzaman passed the order.

Lawyer Barrister Sakir Uddin Ahmed Bappi stood for Tamizi Haque while Deputy Attorney General Md Monirul Islam represented the state during the hearing in the court.

Barrister Sakir Uddin Ahmed Bappi said there is no bar to Adam Tamizi’s release from prison since there are no other cases against him.

On January 4, a Dhaka court sent Adam Tamizi Haque to jail in the CSA case.

A case was filed against Adam Tamizi with Dakkhinkhan police station under the CSA for making derogatory remarks about the prime minister and the country on social media.

The Detective Branch (DB) of police had detained Adam Tamizi Haque for questioning from his home in Gulshan, the capital, on the night of December 10, 2023.

He was later taken to a rehabilitation centre for mental health examination under the DB custody.

On December 9, 2023, the Haque Group chairman was taken to the DB office for questioning in connection with a number of cases filed against him.

On November 17, Adam Tamizi claimed to be a Christian follower by cutting his beard and mustache and sought the citizenship of Israel.

On that day, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided his house.

During the operation, Tamizi reportedly threatened to commit suicide if he were to be arrested.

He repeated the threat during a Facebook Live video.

He also requested the Israeli government's assistance to rescue him from Bangladesh as soon as possible.

In November, Adam Tamizi Haque took to Facebook to announce that a state minister from Gazipur was attempting to seize his business, compelling him to return to Bangladesh from overseas to safeguard his enterprise.

He then conducted a series of Facebook Live sessions, during which he controversially burnt his passport and made disparaging remarks about women in leadership, the Awami League, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In response to his actions, he was swiftly relieved of his party position, and the Dhaka City North Awami League suspended him. They also declared their intent to investigate the motives behind his perplexing Facebook Live broadcasts.
