Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal, a first secretary (taxes, legal, and enforcement) of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), has been transferred to Taxes Zone, Bogra.

The move comes only days after he was accused of accumulating illegal wealth worth Tk1,000 crore.

This information was revealed in a letter signed by Md Shahiduzzaman, first secretary of the Tax Administration Department of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), on Sunday.

The letter said that he has been transferred to Inspector Range-1 of the Bogra Tax Region. Md Moniruzzaman, the additional tax commissioner, has been appointed in his place.

On Thursday, a Dhaka court ordered the freezing of Tk6.96 crore in 87 bank accounts belonging to Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal, his wife, and 14 relatives.

Additionally, Tk2.55 crore held under 15 savings certificates in the names of Faisal and six others have also been frozen.

The court has also ordered the seizure of immovable assets in the names of Faisal’s wife Afsana and three others.

ACC Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol said the NBR first secretary became the owner of huge wealth through bribery and corruption. The ACC is investigating it.

The commission has found that the NBR official accumulated illegal wealth worth Tk1,000 crore.

First, an ACC investigation team discovered his movable and immovable properties, including one flat, a residential plot in Dhaka, and savings certificates worth Tk16 crore.

In a written application, the commission informed the court that Mahmud Faisal had transacted bribes, misusing his power. He opened more than 700 bank accounts in his and his relatives' names to conceal the sources of his income through corruption.

According to the order, the authorities will have to freeze Tk6.96 crore in 87 bank accounts of 14 people, including Mahmud Faisal, and Tk2.55 crore in 15 savings accounts in the names of seven people, including Mahmud Faisal.

The court also ordered to seize immovable assets in the names of four people, including Faisal's wife.

According to the commission's findings, the immovable property includes 0.0285 acres of land worth Tk75 lakh in Bhatara of the capital, four plots in Purbachal of Narayanganj, a flat worth Tk1 crore in Siddheshwari, Dhaka, and 10 acres of land worth Tk4.5 crore in Khilgaon.

Recently, former member of the NBR Matiur Rahman and his family came under discussion due to the goat incident. The Bangladesh Bank has ordered the suspension of their bank accounts.
