Describes violence in various areas as isolated incidents

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said action will be taken against people within the party if their income or wealth has seen extreme increases, but after the January 7 election.

“Even if we cannot take action now, it will definitely happen after the polls, Quader, the road transport and bridges minister, said at a press conference at the party's political office in Dhanmondi on Thursday.

His warning comes just a couple of days after Transparency International Bangladesh in a report said the number of candidates in the upcoming election with immovable assets worth Tk1 crore or more -- 571 in total -- is notably higher compared to previous polls, with the count being 274 in 2008, 202 in 2014 and 552 in 2018.

About the BNP, he said the party’s movement has become rusty as it lacks public support. “No political party would go opt for sabotage for the ouster of the government if they had public support.”

Describing acts of violence in different constituencies as isolated incidents, Quader said: “This is normal. No candidate will boycott the election.”

He said that they want to bring voters to the polling stations by convincing them.
