The remaining 650 tons of onion to be sent to Gazipur and Chittagong
The first consignment of 1, 650 tons of onion that arrived in the country on Sunday night is being handed over to dealers in Dhaka and Chittagong.
Gholam Khorshed, additional director of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), said 1,650 tons of onions on 42 wagons, reached Sirajganj Bazar rail yard around 6am on Monday.
Later, the unloading of the onion began around 9am, he added.
Of the first consignment, 1,000 tons of onions are being handed over to 100 dealers in Dhaka district.
The remaining 650 tons of onion will be sent to Gazipur and Chittagong, said Gholam Khorshed.
He said the government has decided to import onion from neighbouring India after onion prices went up at the local market.
Each kilogram of onion will be sold at Tk40 through open market sale (OMS) of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh in Dhaka and Chittagong within one day, he added.
