Ismail Haniya, the political head of the Palestinian independence armed group Hamas, has reportedly been killed in Tehran, the capital of Iran. Iranian state media confirmed the news, citing a report by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to the IRGC, Haniya and one of his bodyguards were killed in an attack on the building where they were staying. Haniya had traveled to Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Massoud Pezheshkian.
Hamas, in a statement, mourned the loss of Haniya, referring to him as a "leader, martyr, and Mujahid." The organization attributed his death to a "treacherous Zionist operation."
The circumstances surrounding the attack are under investigation, with further details expected to be released soon.
