A Dhaka court has ordered the confiscation of properties belonging to former National Board of Revenue (NBR) officer Matiur Rahman and his family members. The properties include 116 bank accounts, 2,367 decimals of land, and four flats. The order was issued on Thursday (July 11) by Dhaka Metropolitan’s Senior Special Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain.
On July 2, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) stated that Matiur, his wives Laila Kaniz and Shammi Akter Shibli, and children Toufikur Rahman and Farzana Rahman were instructed to submit details of properties beyond their known sources of income within 21 days. The ACC reported evidence of Tk 8 crore being moved from Matiur’s accounts amid an uproar over the goat scandal.
Previously, on June 24, Senior Special Judge Hossain had issued a travel embargo on Matiur, his wife Narsingdi Raipura Upazila Chairman Laila, and son Taufiqur Rahman.
Matiur has been investigated four times by the ACC in the past, and he was cleared each time.
Goat Scandal:
The controversy began when Matiur's son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, purchased a goat for Tk 12 lakh before Eid-ul-Azha, sparking discussions about the NBR officer's alleged corruption. Matiur has denied that Ifat is his son.
Various media outlets have published reports on the vast wealth and luxurious lifestyle of Matiur and his family members. In response, the ACC formed a three-member committee to investigate the allegations.
