Indian actress Sudipa Chatterjee appeared on a Bangladeshi cooking show during Eid-ul-Azha. But soon she found herself surround in controversy due to Bangladeshi actress Tareen Jahan cooking beef standing next to her. Then came the overwhelming hate comments and backlash from some followers of Hinduism, even going as far as sending her death threats and rape threats.
The situation escalated to such a point that according to Sudipa, she’s scared to send her son to school. Sudipa told the Indian media TV Nine, "I am trying to stay well. It's been so long and I still haven't been able to send my son to school. Maybe I can send him after a few days. Police are very helpful. They said they will try to provide security.”
Earlier Sudipa apologized to the netizens on Facebook live. In her words, “I apologize for hurting feelings. I will keep it in mind in the coming days. It didn't really occur to me that it might.”
Later Sudipa Chatterjee clarified her position in an interview given to Hindustan Times. She said, “Many people love to create controversy. I have seen this before. But none of them want to know the truth. No one has seen with their own eyes. Those who post hateful posts about this do not know the whole story. I have neither eaten beef nor cooked beef.”
She elaborated, “I went to Bangladesh for an event on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. It is not in my teaching to interfere with anyone's religious taste. If I respect my own religion, then I cannot interfere with the religion of others.”
Meanwhile, Tareen is worried about Sudipa. The actress told the Indian media Anandbaza, “The script was already written for the episode. And I got involved in this debate without wanting to. A beef dish was finalized keeping in mind the audience during Eid. Accordingly, we displayed cooking that particular dish for the audience. But it is not that I asked Sudipa to eat beef or that I will feed beef on that occasion. We didn't even touch, let alone eat. Anyone can watch the video of that event.”
