The Dhaka University unit of the Chhatra League has taken full control of the DU campus after an hour-long clash and chase counter-chase with agitated students protesting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's remarks about their movement.
Witnesses said after the procession around 3pm Monday, a section of the protesters went to DU’s Bijoy Ekattor Hall demanding quota reform.
When they tried to enter the gate of the hall, Chhatra League activists threw shoes at them. Then the protesters, in response, threw brickbats -- resulting in a clash.
Being chased, the protesters moved towards the Central Shaheed Minar through Fuller Road and the VC Chattar.
After the incident, the Chhatra League activists took full control of the campus after almost an hour.
Hundreds of people were injured in the clashes.
Students from Dhaka University and other universities and colleges across the country erupted in protest late on Sunday, sparked by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's criticism of the movement opposing the reinstatement of quotas in government jobs.
The students responding to a call from the Students Against Discrimination movement, took to the streets in a protest march at around 10:45pm.
Students from all dorms, including the women's halls, participated in the march.
Earlier in the afternoon, during a press conference at Ganabhaban regarding her visit to China, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina criticized those opposing quotas for freedom fighters' descendants.
