Disappointing participation of women and marginalized groups

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that Bangladesh has the lowest recruitment quota among South Asian countries.

He made this comment during a briefing at the Awami League president's office in Dhanmondi, Dhaka on Saturday.

The minister claimed that recruitment quotas in South Asian countries are significantly higher – 60% in India, 92.5% in Pakistan, 45% in Nepal, 50% in Sri Lanka, and 60% in university admissions.

Quader also mentioned that the demands and statements of the anti-quota activists contradict the constitution and principles of governance. He emphasized that the quota law will proceed at its own pace.

"A nefarious faction is trying to take advantage of the anti-quota movement," Quader said.

He added that the lack of quota in recent years has resulted in disappointing participation of women and marginalized groups being left behind.

Before the press conference, the minister met with representatives of university teachers who are protesting over pension issues.

Addressing reporters, Quader clarified misunderstandings about the pension scheme, saying: "The universal pension scheme for all will commence on July 1, 2025."

He assured that other demands of the teachers would be resolved soon through dialogue.

Additionally, Quader noted that approximately 2 million people in 15 districts of the country are affected by floods. He affirmed that Awami League representatives and activists are actively cooperating with the government to assist the flood-affected individuals.
