British-Bengali footballer Hamza Choudhury applied for Bangladeshi passport Wednesday in a bid to kick off his new journey in red and green jersey after agreeing in principle earlier this year.
Bangladesh Football Federation’s general secretary Imran Hossain Tushar confirmed the latest development to Dhaka Tribune.
Born in the United Kingdom, Hamza has both Grenadian and Bangladeshi heritage as his mother hails from Sylhet division.
“Hamza applied for Bangladeshi passport. His mother informed this to us. The rest is just a matter of official procedures,” said Tushar.
The federation’s general secretary added that after obtaining the passport, the process to get clearance from Football Association will start as Hamza had represented England in youth level.
Earlier in February, Dhaka Tribune first reported the news about the mutual agreement between BFF and Hamza.
Soon after that, Hamza’s family members visited Bangladesh to complete birth registration.
Wednesday, Sonia Munni, First Secretary at Bangladesh High Commission in London, shared a facebook post with a photograph of Hamza at her office.
She also wrote: “Hope that Hamza Choudhury will be joining the Bangladesh national football team soon! Had a nice chat with him this morning.”
