Jamaat shows solidarity with BNP, announces 3-day blockade

In a show of solidarity with the BNP, the Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a three-day blockade from Tuesday to Thursday.
The party's acting secretary general, Maulana ATM Masum, announced the program in a statement on Monday
He said several opposition parties, including the BNP and Jamaat, held rallies in Dhaka on Saturday, adding that law enforcement, instead of cooperating in the implementation of the peaceful gatherings,” prevented leaders and activists from joining them.
“They searched leaders and activists coming to the rallies after getting them off buses, launches and trains and arrested them en masse.
“Awami League men attacked the peaceful rallies of the opposition parties and law enforcement forces thwarted them by firing teargas shells and baton-charging attendees. Four people, including a journalist and BNP activist, were killed and thousands of activists were injured. About 2,000 leaders and activists of opposition parties have been arrested.”
The BNP on Sunday announced a three-day all-out blockade across the country from Tuesday to protest police attacks on Saturday’s rally, the arrest of senior leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and others, and harassment amid its ongoing one-point movement for the resignation of the government.
