PM Hasina’s Sylhet visits

To visit shrines of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) and Hazrat Shah Paran (R)


The ruling Awami League will start its election campaign in Sylhet. As part of it, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the chief of the party, will address a rally at the historic Alia Madrasah ground in the city after visiting the shrines of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) and Hazrat Shah Paran (R) on Wednesday.

An atmosphere of celebration prevails among party activists regarding her visit. The last time she came to Sylhet, by helicopter, to see the flood-affected area was on June 21 last year.

Sylhet Metropolitan Awami League Publicity Secretary Abdur Rahman Jamil said: “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina takes Sylhet differently, which is why she always starts her election campaign from the holy land of Sylhet every time.” 

Sources say the prime minister visited Sylhet on December 22, 2018. She had also attended a pre-election rally on January 30 of the same year. 

She has visited Sylhet many times before. 

In 2001, she went to Sylhet thrice in February, August and September. 

She visited the city for the first time on May 29, 1981, when she spoke at the Alia Madrasah ground.

After that, she visited Sylhet on October 10, 1986 and spoke at the same ground. 

Then after two years, she came to Haripur, Sylhet, on October 9, 1987. 

She then attended a reception at Puler Mukh of the city on March 20, 1989. A day later, she visited Balaganj, Bishwanath and Jagannathpur in Sylhet. 

Sheikh Hasina attended a farmers’ rally in Mogla Bazar in Sylhet on January 3, 1990. Later on February 5, 1991, she went to the city and ran an election campaign on the Alia Madrasah ground. After that visit, she came to Sylhet on June 29, 1993. She again visited Sylhet on February 26, 1997. Sheikh Hasina visited Sylhet and attended a protest on the grounds of Alia Madrasah on October 19-20 of the same year.  

Later she visited Sylhet on February 1, August 27 and September 26 of 2001, 2004, 2005, April 3 and November of 2010, March 24, 2012, September 16, 2013, June 18, 2015, and January 21 and November 23 of 2016. She later went to Shalla in Sunamganj to stand by the farmers affected by crop loss in the haor area on April 30, 2017.
