In a press conference organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud announced that he plans to raise concerns over the current situation at the Myanmar border during his upcoming three-day visit to New Delhi.
Scheduled to depart on Tuesday, the Foreign Minister expressed his intention to discuss general issues with Indian counterparts, including the Foreign Minister, Commerce Minister, and Security Adviser. Emphasizing the longstanding cooperation between the two countries, Mahmud highlighted the need for India's assistance in repatriating those forcibly displaced from Myanmar.
Addressing the recent summoning of the Myanmar ambassador, Mahmud stated that a strong protest had been lodged regarding the unintended consequences of internal conflicts, leading to the entry of Myanmar citizens into Bangladesh. The Foreign Minister affirmed Bangladesh's commitment to working towards the return of Rohingya refugees.
Responding to questions about the entry of common people from Myanmar, Mahmud clarified that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGP) members residing with their families near the border had crossed, numbering 229 in the past two days, with a possibility of more arrivals.
Regarding the potential impact on Bangladesh due to the Myanmar situation, Mahmud asserted that a strong protest had been conveyed to the Myanmar ambassador, emphasizing the unacceptable nature of the incursions. He mentioned ongoing discussions with Myanmar authorities on the repatriation of their citizens who entered Bangladesh during the crisis.
In a related development, India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval engaged in talks with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about the escalating conflict in Myanmar during his recent visit to Dhaka. The discussions covered the multifaceted challenges arising from armed rebel groups' prolonged conflict with the Myanmar military, gaining renewed momentum since the military assumed power in 2021.
