Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said that many BNP members are poised to participate in the upcoming upazila elections in defiance of the party decision.

“Despite the party's vocal stance against the upazila elections, numerous BNP members would take part in the forthcoming polls,” he said during a press conference held at the political office of the Awami League president in Dhanmondi on Tuesday (April 16).

Quader also disclosed that party symbols would not be used in the upazila elections scheduled for May 8.

He said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had instructed Members of Parliament to refrain from exerting undue influence, emphasising the importance of maintaining a fair electoral environment.

Commenting on the global challenges posed by ongoing conflicts, Quader reassured the public of the government's efforts to stabilise prices and foster economic resilience.

He highlighted a surge in transactions within the banking sector and noted favourable trading activity during the fasting period.

In response to queries from journalists, Quader addressed concerns regarding Bangladesh's ranking in the Atlantic Freedom Index, which reportedly witnessed a decline by 25 steps.

He sought clarification from the US ambassador regarding this development, reflecting the government's commitment to addressing challenges and upholding democratic values.
