Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman said that Bangladesh has risen from third to second position after China in freshwater fish production, surpassing China, which has now dropped to third.
The minister also said that Bangladesh is trying to achieve first place surpassing India in future.
Abdur Rahman made these remarks at a press conference at the Secretariat on Thursday afternoon.
Referring to the data of “The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture” report published on Saturday by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Abdur Rahman said: “Bangladesh has overtaken China to become the second position in the world in freshwater fish production.”
The report, which is released every two years, used data from 2022.
“In terms of fish caught from ponds and other enclosed water bodies Bangladesh ranked at number five, while it ranked 14th in marine fish production and ranked 8th in Crustacean production,” added the minister.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman, also a presidium member of Awami League, said: “In the last year China's freshwater fish production was 1.46 million tons and Bangladesh’s production 1.25 million tons. Bangladesh's freshwater fish production has increased from 1.25 million tons to 1.32 million tons in the last two years. On the other hand, China's production decreased from 1.46 million tons to 1.16 million tons. As a result, in The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024 report, Bangladesh has risen to the second position above China, which is an incredible achievement of the current government.”
He added: “Bangladesh earned self-sufficiency in fish production in the 2016-17 fiscal year, after 46 years of independence under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”
The minister thanked the prime minister for her support in the fisheries sector of Bangladesh and expressed optimism about reaching more milestones in the fisheries sector of the world.
Sayeed Mahmood Belal Haider, secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, and other high officials were present at the briefing.
