Rally called for demanding student politics be allowed back
Bangladesh Chhatra League on Sunday demanded that Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) authorities immediately lift its ban on student politics on campus.
The student organization’s President, Saddam Hussain issued the call from a protest rally at Central Shaheed Minar on Sunday afternoon.
They have urged Buet authorities to conduct elections for its student union. They also want Buet to reconsider cancelling the dormitory seat assigned to Chhatra League central committee member and Buet student Imtiaz Hossain Rahim Rabbi.
Student political activities were prohibited at Buet following the murder of Abrar Fahad by Bangladesh Chhatra League members in the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 7, 2019.
Chhatra League's call for the return of student politics to Buet comes amid recent student demonstrations against Thursday's gathering of Chhatra League activists on the campus.
On Wednesday afternoon, some Buet students claimed that around 1am, some Chhatra League members came into the campus. Despite student politics being banned, they say some leaders and activists from the Chhatra League entered the campus that night and took part in political activities.
Expressing anger over the incident, the students submitted a six-point demand to the Buet administration on Saturday afternoon.
They have announced to boycott of all academic activities, including Saturday and Sunday examinations, to press home their demands.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have cancelled Imtiaz Hossain's hall seat in the face of the movement.
A press release by Chhatra League says Buet's decision to cancel Imtiaz Hossain Rahim Rabbi’s dormitory seat is completely rejected by Bangladesh's freedom and democracy-loving people and student community.
The release condemned the Buet administration's decision as unfair, unconstitutional, against fundamental rights, and an act of moral decline by a leading educational institution.
The Buet administration is unlawfully and unconstitutionally implementing the ban on student politics without any legal authority, the release added.
