Declared blockade program would continue on Tuesday

Students from Rangpur Begum Rokeya University (BRUR) have staged a protest by blocking the highway in Rangpur to press home their four-point demand, including cancelling the quota system in government jobs and reinstating the 2018 circular.

The protest occurred at 1pm on Monday at the Modern More area, which is the entrance to the city, blocking the major highway that connects the eight districts of the Rangpur division, including Dhaka.

During the two-hour blockade, road communication with these eight districts was disrupted.

Hundreds of buses, trucks, and other vehicles were stuck, causing severe inconvenience to passengers.

During the protest, Ashfaq and Sajidul, a student, said: "The government has introduced the quota system to ruin the career lives of students. We do not accept this decision. We announced that the movement would continue until our demands were met.”

Later, senior police officers arrived and urged the students to clear the highway. The students then withdrew the blockade program but declared that the highway blockade would also continue on Tuesday.
