Fakhrul had claimed Benazir fled the country without obstruction

Former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who is accused of corruption, will have to return to Bangladesh if he is found guilty, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said.

Obaidul Quader said, "The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating the allegations against Benazir Ahmed. Investigations, cases, arrests – everything is a legal process. Why would the government interfere with ACC?”

He said this at a press conference at the Awami League president's office in Dhanmondi on Sunday.

"No ruler or government in this country after 1975 could show the courage to take action against the corrupt. Sheikh Hasina's government has shown it,” he added.

About BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s claim that Benazir Ahmed fled abroad with the government's help, the Awami League general secretary said: “Who went and put him on an airplane? Do not throw stones in the dark.”

On Saturday, at a program, Fakhrul questioned how Benazir Ahmed and his family members left the country without obstruction despite the allegations of amassing huge assets illegally.

He also said this incident exposed the ruling party leaders' claims of not sparing wrongdoers as mere eyewash and deception.

“I saw a media report that Benazir (ex-IGP) and his family went to Singapore, leaving the country on May 4. Before leaving, he emptied all his bank accounts and withdrew around Tk60 crore. I don’t know whether the amount is much bigger,” Fakhrul said.

On Tuesday, ACC summoned former IGP Benazir Ahmed for questioning on June 6.

On April 23, the High Court asked the ACC to submit a progress report on the investigation of the alleged illegal wealth of former IGP Benazir Ahmed and his family, within two months.

Previously, Benazir Ahmed broke his silence on April 20, three weeks after a national daily and a TV channel published news alleging illicit assets in his possession.

The ACC in April formed a committee to investigate the alleged corruption of Benazir Ahmed and his family.
