Many locals also joined prayers
Hundreds of thousands of attendees from home and abroad offered Jummah prayers on the bank of the Turag River on Friday, the first day of the three-day Bishwa Ijtema.
Maulana Zubair Ahmad delivered the Jummah sermon at 1:36pm and led the prayer at 1:46pm.
Apart from those who have gathered from all around the country at the Ijtema venue, many local Muslims—from Gazipur and nearby areas—thronged the Ijtema ground to offer Jummah prayers.
Around noon, the Ijtema ground was overflowing and the surrounding open spaces turned into a wave of people.
Attendees swarmed the environs outside the 160 acres of the Ijtema ground, the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, Kamarpara Road and both sides of the Turag.
Those unable to find room on the ground sat on their prayer rugs on the main road, roadsides and alleys. Many used newspapers and jute bags instead of prayer rugs.
At the time, traffic on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway remained suspended.
Over 2,000 people from 47 different countries joined the local attendees in the nation during the prayer.
In certain areas surrounding the Ijtema Maidan, women are also seen preparing for the prayer.
Maulana Khatib of Jordan was scheduled to give a sermon after Jummah, Hafez Maulana Zubair of Bangladesh after Asr and India's Maulana Ahmad Lat after Maghrib.
