About 40,000 people have been left stranded in the low-lying areas of Durgapur upazila in Netrokona due to floods caused by heavy rainfall and onrush of water from the Garo hilly region of India.
Three unions—Kullagora, Gawkandia and Kakoirgora—have been severely affected by the flood, acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Durgapur upazila Mohammad Mustafijur Rahman told the media on Sunday (October 6).
Standing crops on 9,000 hectares of land have been submerged, said Mustafijur.
He said the flood has forced the closure of educational institutions in the affected areas.
Deputy Commissioner Banani Biswas has visited the flood-hit areas and distributed relief materials, including rice, pulse and edible oil, among flood-affected people.
The deputy commissioner assured the people of all possible assistance, the UNO added.
