Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury speaks to the media on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has described as “regrettable” the beating deaths of a man at Dhaka University on suspicion of theft and a former Chhtra League leader at Jahangirnagar University.

"If someone commits a crime, turn them over to the law. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands," Jahangir said after a meeting at the headquarters of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Thursday.

Speaking about such recent instances of "mob justice," the adviser reiterated that no one should take the law into their own hands.

Jahangir advised members of the police force to become more people-friendly. He told reporters that the government had given them instructions on how to revive their former glory by motivating their spirits.

“The concept of a people-friendly police force should not just remain on paper but be implemented in reality.”

The adviser mentioned that topics such as traffic control, extortion, bribery and corruption had been discussed.

He emphasized that the police must ensure that people were not harassed in any way.

"Now, instead of police filing complaints, the victims themselves are filing complaints; this is a positive change," he added.

Tofazzal Hossain, 32, was beaten to death in front of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall at DU on suspicion of theft around midnight on Wednesday.

On the other hand, a former organizational secretary of the Chhatra League’s JU unit, Shamim Ahmed, was subjected to a mob beating the same day. Doctors declared him dead when he was brought to the hospital.
