Remittance by Bangladeshi expatriates doubled in 13 years

Remittances sent by Bangladeshi expatriate workers doubled in the last 13 years, increasing to $21.61 billion in the outgoing fiscal year 2023-24.
The remittance was $10.99 billion in the 2009-10 fiscal year, which doubled to $21.61 billion in 2023-24.
Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali made the announcement in his budget speech on Thursday.
The finance minister said remittances sent by expatriate workers are playing an important role in making Bangladesh’s economy self-reliant.
Mahmood Ali said the government allocated Tk500 crore in favour of Probashi Kallyan Bank to provide easy loans to expatriate returnee workers.
Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali presented the proposed budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year amounting to Tk797,000 crore (Tk7.97 trillion) in parliament on Thursday.
This was his first budget unveiling and the first budget after the reelection of the Awami League government in January.
