Travel ban imposed on Matiur and family members earlier this month

Laila Kaniz, the first wife of former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman, has applied to a Dhaka court seeking the withdrawal of a travel ban imposed on her.

She appeared in court on Sunday and filed the application through her lawyer.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain then scheduled the hearing on this application for July 27.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam confirmed this information to the Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

Laila Kaniz is chairman of Raipura upazila parishad in Narsingdi.

PP Salam told Prothom Alo that Matiur Rahman stood accused of accumulating huge wealth through corruption, allegations the ACC was investigating.

As Matiur, Laila and their family members, including their son, were attempting to flee the country, on June 24, the ACC filed an application in court seeking a travel ban on them, which the court granted, he added.

One Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat gained attention on social media after posting on Facebook about buying a goat for Eid-ul-Azha for Tk15 lakh. He identified Matiur as his father in some of his posts.

This sparked questions about how an official with a basic monthly salary of Tk78,000 at his grade (grade-1) could afford such an expense.

In a TV interview, however, Matiur denied that Ifat was his son, stating he only had two children—a son and a daughter.

Later, Feni-2 lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari claimed on a television program that Ifat was Matiur's son from his second marriage.

Over his 30-year career, Matiur has been investigated multiple times for graft by the Anti-Corruption Commission.

The whereabouts of Matiur, who recently lost his position as president of the National Board of Revenue's (NBR) Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal, are currently unknown.

While discussions on the matter continued, after a long 14 days, on June 27, Matiur’s wife and Raipura Upazila Parishad Chairman Laila Kaniz made a public appearance, participating in two meetings at the upazila parishad office from 11am to 1pm that day.
