Education officers can shut down schools at the local level if necessary

Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury has dismissed any possibility of nationwide closure of educational institutions due to heatwave in parts of the country.

The minister said this at an event in Dhaka on Sunday.

However, he emphasized that in districts where the heat becomes unbearable, schools would have the autonomy to make decisions accordingly.

District primary and secondary education officers can shut down educational institutions at the local level after thorough discussions.

The minister said that while temperatures in five districts were exceeded 40°C, such temperatures are not unprecedented in Bangladesh.

“It is unreasonable to shut down all educational institutions nationwide based solely on forecasts for a handful of districts,” he explained.

He cautioned against making decisions for schools across the country solely based on the temperature of Dhaka city.

Regarding potential extreme situations where temperatures soar to 42°C or above, the education minister education officers have the authority to convene discussions and decide on closing educational institutions in their area. They can also adjust operating hours as deemed necessary.
