Adds that sanctions should be imposed on BNP
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said his party is not worried about any sanctions over the upcoming general election.
“We are moving towards a free, fair and peaceful election under our independent Election Commission following the constitution. Why would there be any sanctions?” Quader, also minister of road transport and bridges, said at a press briefing at the Awami League president's Dhanmondi office in the capital on Friday.
Quader said sanctions should be imposed on the BNP as it is threatening the holding of a fair election through attacks. “If the US decides to impose sanctions, only the BNP and its allies should be eligible for them.”
He said the prime minister has increased the minimum salary for workers in the interest of the garment sector. “The government is sincere about the interests of workers in this sector. Later, the government will take measures to enact a new labour law in parliament if it returns to power. There is no reason to complicate things over this issue.”
About sharing seats with allies, the Awami League leader said a decision will come before December 17.
Voter turnout will be better this time around, he said, adding that no obstacles, threats or arson attacks can thwart the election.
