Distance-based rebate will be abolished

The government has decided to withdraw distance-based concessions for passengers, resulting in an increase in train fares.

This decision will be effective from May 4, a Bangladesh Railway circular disclosed the information on Monday.

The notice said that in 1992, distance-based and section-based concessions were given in Bangladesh Railway.

In 2012, the section-based rebate was abolished, but the distance-based rebate remained in force.

Recently, it has been decided to withdraw only the existing distance-based concession without increasing fares in passenger trains. This decision will be implemented from May 4, the notice said.

At present, passengers get 20% discount for 101-150km, 25% for 151-400km, and 30% for more than 400km.

On March 16, Director General of Bangladesh Railway Sardar Shahadat Ali told the media that the railway fare would be increased.

Later, Railway Minister Zillul Hakim said there is no plan to increase the train fare. Now passengers would have to pay extra fare due to the withdrawal of the concession facility.
