A court in Dhaka on Monday sent Gaan Bangla TV Chairman Kaushik Hossain Taposh to jail in an attempted murder case filed over an alleged attack on businessman Ishtiaque Mahmud during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman issued the order after police produced Taposh before the court and requested a seven-day remand for him in the case.
The court sent Taposh to jail and set Wednesday for the remand hearing, as the case’s investigating officer was absent during Monday’s proceedings.
Taposh was arrested in the Uttara area earlier in the day.
According to the case documents, on July 18, Ishtiaque Mahmud and others participated in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement protests near Azampur Nawab Habibullah High School in Uttara Sector-4.
Allegedly, attackers linked to the Awami League fired shots at the protesters, injuring Ishtiaque, who was shot in the abdomen.
He received treatment at Evercare Hospital.
On September 29, Ishtiaque filed a case with Uttara East police station, naming 126 individuals, including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
