Quota issue has to be resolved in court: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that the quota reform issue has to be solved in court.

“They don’t understand how things operate,” she said at a press conference in Ganabhaban on Sunday (July 14).

“I don’t have any right to act against the court’s verdict,” she said. “We can’t do anything until a solution comes from the court.”

She said the government will not oppose peaceful demonstration.

Anti-quota protest

The government scrapped quotas in first- and second-class jobs on October 4, 2018, after a series of student protests. Some children of freedom fighters challenged the decision in court.

In June of this year, the High Court said the government’s circular was illegal, effectively reinstating the quota system. But on July 10, the Appellate Division issued a four-week status quo on the High Court’s order. This meant that the 2018 circular would be effective during this time.

But on July 11, the High Court published some part of its verdict, where it said that the government is free to reform the quota system if it wants.
