The accident occurred around 7:30am in the Jangalai Mazar Gate area on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway, said SI Monzur Hossain of Dohazari highway police.
The deceased were Arafat, 21, Rifat, 18, Nizam, 28, Siddique, 14, and Nazim, 30, he confirmed.
Rakhall Chandra Rudra, an officer at the Lohagara fire station, reported that a bus from Soudia Paribahan, heading towards Cox's Bazar from Chittagong, collided head-on with a minibus coming from the opposite direction.
The minibus was traveling from Ukhiya upazila in Cox's Bazar to Satkania in Chittagong, he said.
Five people died at the scene, and 10-12 others were injured and sent to various hospitals, the fire service official added.
SI Monzur said: "Both vehicles involved in the accident have been seized."
