At the same time, the abducted businessman and General Secretary of the Sriapur Municipal Awami League in Gazipur district have been rescued.
The arrested individuals are National Citizen Committee leader Imon Molla, Executive Editor of Dainik Provaton newspaper Ziaus Sadat, former president of the Metropolitan Jubo Dal Mahabub Hasan Piaru, Imon’s associate Joy Hasan, and Sakir Rahman.
Imon Molla is a member of the Sonadanga Thana Committee of the National Citizen Committee, while former Jubo Dal leader Piaru was the joint convener of the recently dissolved committee of the Khulna Metropolitan BNP.
According to the police, they were arrested during raids conducted at various locations in the metropolitan area between Saturday evening and 11pm. Based on their confessions, the abducted Awami League leader was rescued from a house in the Bosupara area.
Inspector Md Taimur Islam of the Detective Branch of Khulna Metropolitan Police said Awami League leader and businessman Nur Alam's son resides in the Bosupara area of Khulna. Due to this, Nur Alam used to stay in Khulna. On Friday night, the businessman was abducted. He was held in a house in Bosupara, and a ransom of one crore taka was demanded from his son.
He also said that Nur Alam's son reported the matter to the Detective Branch of the police. Following a police operation, members of the abduction gang came to collect the ransom in front of Hotel Grand Placid at Moylapota in the city, where Imon Molla was arrested. Later, based on his confession, police conducted raids at various locations in the city and arrested the remaining individuals. Based on their confessions, police rescued the abducted Nur Alam.
Another officer of the Detective Branch stated that previously, Imon Molla had extorted money from several individuals under the guise of being a National Citizen Committee and student coordinator. Multiple complaints have also been filed against Jubo Dal leader Piaru.
The five arrested individuals have been sent to jail through the court after being shown arrested in a case filed by the victim’s son.
