An arrest warrant has been issued in Chittagong against Nurul Haque Nur, the president of Gono Odhikar Parishad and former vice president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu), over derogatory remarks made against Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury.

Chittagong Divisional Cyber Tribunal Judge Mohammad Zahirul Kabir issued the warrant on Monday, said Divisional Cyber Tribunal Public Prosecutor (PP) Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury.

He said, the case was filed by former Chhatra League leader Shahriar Tanim, charging Nurul Haque Nur under sections 25, 29, and 31 of the Digital Security Act. The court entrusted the investigation to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police, which subsequently submitted a report. Following Monday's hearing, the court issued an arrest warrant against the accused.

Earlier, Advocate Shahriar Tanim, a former legal affairs secretary of the Chittagong University branch of Chhatra League and a city corporation panel lawyer, filed the case against Nurul Haque Nur under the Digital Security Act. The charges include sections 25, 29, and 31 of the Act.

According to the case's application, on June 1, 2022, the accused organized a rally under the banner of Chhatra Jubo Odhikar Parishad and made various derogatory remarks about the prime minister, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jubo League and the education minister.

The video of the event circulated on social media, particularly Facebook.

In the video, the education minister was referred to as a “gangster”.

The case was filed on June 14, 2022, and the court directed the CID to investigate on June 28. The investigating officer submitted the report to the court on February 6 this year.
