Meeting with president before announcing polls schedule a tradition

The Election Commission's meeting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin has been deferred to November 9.

The meeting was previously scheduled for Sunday.

All four election commissioners, headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal, would meet the president ahead of announcing the schedule for the 12th national polls.

Convening a meeting with the president prior to the announcement of the national election schedule has been a longstanding tradition.

The commission had already conducted a meeting with Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan on November 1.

According to the constitution, parliamentary elections must be held within 90 days before the end of the five-year term of parliament. The term of the current parliament ends on January 29, 2024, while the 90-day count starts from November 1, 2023.

The Election Commission said that it is preparing to announce the schedule of the national election in mid-November and hold the election in January.
