What Myanmar is doing is a severe threat to Bangladesh’s sovereignty’

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged that heavy illegal arms are entering Bangladesh through the Myanmar border.

Extending advance greetings for the Eid-ul-Azha, the veteran politician said: "The junta forces of war-torn Myanmar frequently intrude into Bangladesh. The subservient government of Sheikh Hasina remains indifferent to the aggressive actions of the junta forces."

He made the statement at a press conference held at the party's central office in Nayapaltan on Sunday afternoon.

Rizvi said: "They are being sent back to Myanmar. Yet, in the past seven to eight years, it has not been possible to repatriate even one member of the Rohingya population forcibly pushed into Bangladesh from Myanmar. Why hasn't it been possible? Is Bangladesh protecting the interests of some country? Whose interests are being protected then? The people have the right to know what policy Bangladesh is adopting regarding Myanmar."

Pointing out people’s hardships, he said: "People have no food at home. Even the upper-middle-class and middle-class are now economically cornered; they have lost the ability to afford animals for sacrifices. From the stock market to the neighbourhood grocery market, ordinary people are helpless against the tyranny of syndicates."

Rizvi said: "The country's borders are unprotected. Saint Martin's Island is almost besieged. Bangladeshi citizens do not feel safe going there. What Myanmar is doing around there in the past few days is a severe threat to the country's sovereignty. There has been extreme instability along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border for a long time."
