Exim Bank ex-chairman arrested

Nazrul Islam Mazumder, former chairman of Exim Bank, has been arrested.

He was arrested from the capital’s Gulshan area on Tuesday (October 1), said the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

Mazumder was removed from the chairman's post on August 5 following the fall of the Awami League government.

He had held the position of chairman at Exim Bank since 2007 and led the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) since 2009.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) froze the bank accounts of Mazumder and his wife Nasrin Islam on August 25.

He has been accused of extorting money from banks and allegedly manipulating the Bank Companies Act to favour specific stakeholders.
