9 firefighting units managed to douse the blaze in an hour
Several tin-shed houses have been gutted in a fire at Loitar Ghat shanty town at Firingi Bazar Fishery Ghat in Chittagong city.
The incident took place at around 1:20pm on Monday.
On information, nine units of fire service from four stations rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after an hour's effort.
The cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
Dinmin Sharma, deputy director of Chittagong Divisional Fire Service, said the fire broke out in the shanty town adjacent to Mariners Road in Firingi Bazar.
He elaborated, citing slum dwellers, that preliminary investigations suggest that the fire originated from electric pole wires attached to coconut trees, which then ignited the slum area. Fortunately, despite the intensity of the fire, residents of the slum remained unharmed.
Regarding the extent of damage, Dinmin said: "At this point, we have yet to ascertain the full extent of the damage caused by the fire." Omar Faruk, a witness, said there are more than 50 tin-shed houses in the shanty town. Many houses burned in the fire.
