Attack on Anti-Quota Protesters in Dhaka University: 182 Students Injured

At least 182 students were injured during an attack by Chhatra League on anti-quota protesters in the Dhaka University area. The injured were rescued and brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital by 6:30 PM on Monday, July 15. This information was confirmed by the inspector in charge of the DMC Hospital Police Camp, Bachchu Mia, who stated that all 182 injured students have been treated in the emergency department.

Injured students reported that six female students were injured in an attack by Chhatra League inside Eden College. Additionally, Chhatra League activists attacked and injured anti-quota students at Raju Vaskarya, Doel Chatwar, Zia Hall, Shahidullah Hall, and Vijay Ekatar Hall. Most of the injured suffered head injuries and were bleeding.

The names of the injured who arrived at DMC Hospital include Saima, Tamanna, Fahmida, Eskaya, Mahmudul Hasan, Yakub, Najib, Masood, Zahid, Sakhawat, Simon, Saqib, Eva, Imran, Qazi Tasnim, Sakil, Eva, Fahim, Enamul, Shakeel, Hamza, Rifad Rashid, Zaheer, Tisha, Rana, Sujan, Sakhawat, Rafiq, Seema, Emu, Israt, Jewel, Jubel, Likhan, Sajjad, Awana, Naeem, Sabbir, Raihan, Qayyum, Megh Basu, Saqib, Fahim, Ahsanullah, Labib, Tanveer, Fahmidul, Rayom, Shakeel, Priya, Sabbir, Masum, Fahin, Iman, Abu Jahed, Shubo, Shakib, Mahbub, Junayet, Murad, Mehdi Asadullah, Khokon, Ujjwal, Arpi, Iti, Rafim, Siam, Ami, Jamia, Suman, Rizvi, Abid, and Tariqul. The names of five students who came for treatment are not known.

The clashes began at around 3:00 PM when agitating students and Chhatra League activists took a stand at Dhaka University. At one stage, the two parties began to chase each other, and the clash spread across the campus. Witnesses reported seeing bricks and sticks used in the confrontation.

Leaders and activists from Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Chhatra League, along with other units including Dhaka College, joined the fray. The general students were eventually dispersed, and Chhatra League activists took a position in front of the Raju sculpture. The situation remains tense on the campus, with Chhatra League leaders and activists seen rehearsing with sticks and rods.

Earlier, around 3:00 PM, students from Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering, Jagannath University, Dhaka College, and Eden College began their second day of agitation demanding the withdrawal of the Prime Minister's statement on the 'Muktijoddha Quota' in government jobs. They gathered at the foot of the Raju sculpture and protested, marching through important areas of the campus before returning to the Raju sculpture for a rally.

The protest march included slogans such as "Quota na Medha, Medha Medha," "Ke Razakar Ke Razakar, Tui Razakar Tui Razakar," "The spirit of the liberation war, the state is not of anyone's father," "I wanted rights, I became a Razakar," "In my independent Bengal, one Katha Chali Na," "Tumi Ke Ami Ke, Bengali Bengali," "Bought in the blood of lakhs of martyrs, the country is nobody's father," "action to action, direct action," and "movement with attacks/cases, can't be stopped."
