Attempts on to destroy press freedom: Fakhrul

Fakhrul

Urges people to be vigilant against plot to destabilise the country

A group of "reckless instigators" are trying to destroy press freedom in the country, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today.

"This is something that no conscious or patriotic citizen should accept in any way. I urge everyone concerned to refrain from this kind of self-destructive work. Please help institutionalise democracy," Fakhrul said at a programme in the capital.

"Sadly, a troubling trend has emerged -- assault on the press and freedom of expression. These are principles for which we have always fought and strived," he said, adding that it was Khaleda Zia who "first freed the press in 2001".

"Press freedom was enjoyed the most during Khaleda Zia's tenure, under the BNP government. This is the reality," he added.

Fakhrul said, "We need to have patience. This is an interim government, and it is not possible for this government to accomplish everything at once. We are not against reforms, but challenges like these cannot be addressed without elections."

"Today, seeing the state of the country, many are feeling a bit anxious and concerned. You must understand that our enemies, who have left the forefront, are now trying to destabilise the country from behind. We need to remain extremely vigilant about this," Fakhrul said, urging patience from the people.

The BNP leader said, "It is unfortunate that, for some reason, the people of our country lack tolerance. We must exercise patience. Today, we need to assist this government."

"Because if this government fails, the uprising will fail, the revolution will fail, and we will once again descend into darkness. Therefore, I believe it is essential for everyone to think positively about these issues," he added.
