It also sought wealth statements of their wives and children

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has issued a notice requesting the wealth statements of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and Matiur Rahman, the former president of the National Board of Revenue's (NBR) Customs, Excise, and VAT Appellate Tribunal. The ACC has given them a 21-working-day deadline to submit the statements.

Details of the Notice

The notice also requires information about the assets of their wives and children. This development was confirmed by ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen during a press briefing in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Background on Benazir Ahmed

Benazir Ahmed, who has missed several ACC summons in the past, held various significant positions:

  • IGP from April 2020 to September 2022
  • Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion from January 2015 to April 2020
  • Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)

Asset Seizures

ACC officials have reported that court orders have been issued to seize Benazir’s assets. So far, 12 flats in Dhaka, including four in Gulshan, have been identified under his family’s name.

Rumors and Controversy Surrounding Matiur Rahman

Matiur Rahman came under scrutiny on social media after rumors spread that his son purchased a goat for Tk15 lakh during Eid-ul-Azha. Rahman denied these claims, stating: "Iffat, the person being talked about, is neither my son nor even a relative or acquaintance. My only son's name is Toufiqur Rahman. I will formally protest these rumours."

Wealth and Properties

Media reports have indicated that Matiur Rahman and his family own resorts, shooting spots, bungalow houses, land, and other properties.

High Court Directive on Wealth Statements

The High Court has directed the government to enforce the Government Servants (Conduct) Rules, 1979, which mandate the submission and disclosure of wealth statements by government officials and employees. The court has also ordered the submission of a progress report within the next three months on the steps taken to implement this rule. The directive was issued by the High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Ebadoth Hossain after hearing a writ petition on Tuesday.

This move reflects the ACC's ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and accountability among government officials.
