‘BNP has pardoned criminals, not punishing them’

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said the former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed will be punished if found guilty.

"No criminal will escape punishment. Many think that because Benazir Ahmed's home is in Tungipara, he might be pardoned. But if he has committed a crime, he must be punished,"
he made the comments during a press conference.

Obaidul Quader said: “The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating Benazir Ahmed. Further investigations will follow. If charged, he must face trial.

"Even if the person was the head of the army, if he committed a crime, the ACC would investigate him. A criminal must be punished."

Accusing the BNP of spreading propaganda to cover their own crimes, he said: "The BNP has pardoned criminals, not punishing them. The Awami League government has zero tolerance for corruption. Sheikh Hasina is uncompromising in matters of corruption."

On April 23, the High Court asked the ACC to submit a progress report on the investigation of the alleged illegal wealth of former IGP Benazir Ahmed and his family, within two months.

Previously, Benazir Ahmed broke his silence on April 20, three weeks after a national daily and a TV channel published news alleging illicit assets in his possession.

The ACC in April formed a committee to investigate the alleged corruption of Benazir Ahmed and his family.
