A Rangpur court has placed the two police officials arrested over the murder of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, on a four-day remand.

Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court-2 Judge Asaduzzaman on Tuesday granted the remand period for the main accused of the murder case Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy.

At the same time, the court ordered that the directives of the Supreme Court be followed during the remand.

The two accused were brought to court under heavy security around 9am.

The investigating officer, Rangpur Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain, sought a five-day remand for them.

He explained to the court that the remand was necessary to obtain detailed information about the individuals involved in ordering Abu Sayed's murder and others connected to the case.

On Monday, the PBI arrested ASI Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy. They were earlier suspended and attached to police lines.

On August 18, a case was filed by Abu Sayed's elder brother, Ramzan Ali. It named 17 individuals and mentioned an additional 30-35 unidentified persons.

On August 10, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus met the family members of Abu Sayed. He offered prayers at the grave of Abu Sayed seeking divine blessings for his soul.

Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Adviser Md Nahid Islam and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan were accompanying the chief adviser.

On July 16, protesters marched five kilometres through the city to Begum Rokeya University, with Sayed joining them. Clashes erupted with quota supporters, and police fired rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Despite the chaos, Sayed stood firm, refusing to budge. At one point, he was shot allegedly by  ASI Amir Ali and Constable Sujon Chandra Roi in the chest and fell to the ground.

He was immediately taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.
