A Border Security Force (BSF) constable has been critically injured following an attack by a few men who were illegally trying to enter India from the Bangladesh side.

The BSF in a statement said they had informed the issue to their Bangladesh counterpart BGB. A Commandant-level flag meeting is scheduled to address the issue.

The incident occurred at around 11pm on Monday near the BSF Border Outpost in Nadia, West Bengal.

The condition of Constable Gokul Mondal is critical and he is under the observation of doctors at SSKM Trauma Care Hospital in Kolkata.

Gokul Mondal was on duty when he observed the movement of six/seven suspicious individuals within the Indian territory.

He immediately alerted adjacent patrolling parties to stay vigilant.

Around 11:20pm, after breaching the improvised fence, another BSF head constable spotted three/four individuals crossing the Indo-Bangladesh Border Road (IBBR) from the Bangladesh side.

Despite being asked to stop, the men continued advancing into Indian territory.

The situation escalated when the suspected individuals attempted to encircle and potentially harm the head constable, prompting him to fire a non-lethal round in self-defence.

Constable Gokul Mondal rushed to assist but was ambushed by the men, who were already 450 meters inside the Indian territory.

The attackers assaulted Gokul with sharp weapons, causing him severe injuries to his lower hip, waist, and neck. His uniform was torn, and the force of the attack severed his belt.

Despite these injuries and the critical damage to his rifle, Constable Mondal adhered to the non-lethal engagement protocol, refraining from using his lethal weapon, the BSF said.
