A 50-year-old Bangladeshi man was reportedly shot and killed by members of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Burichang upazila’s Jamtala border in Comilla on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Anwar Hossain, a resident of Mirpur village in Bakshimul union, son of the late Charu Miah.

Burichang police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Hasnat confirmed the incident.

According to BGB, police, and local sources, Anwar Hossain from Mirpur village near the Indian border worked as a labourer carrying illegally smuggled sugar from that country.

BGB 60 battalion Captain Lt Colonel AM Jaber bin Jabbar said: “Anwar Hossain attempted to illegally enter India. During this attempt, he was shot and killed on the spot by BSF members. However, his body is still in the custody of the BSF. Efforts are underway to discuss the matter with them.”

Bakshimul Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Karim said that Anwar was shot by the BSF at the Jamtala border around 8:30am. He went to the border to illegally bring sugar.
