Allegedly threatened independent candidate
The Election Commission (EC) has ordered the officials concerned to file a case against a Swechchhasebak League leader over allegations of threatening an independent candidate in Comilla.
The letter, signed by Election Commission Deputy Secretary Abdus Salam, was issued on Thursday but came to light on Friday.
The letter says that in the Comilla-4 constituency, Liton Sarkar, a follower of the Awami League candidate Raji Mohammad Fakhrul, at a program of the Jubo League on December 5 issued a threat against independent candidate Md Abul Kalam Azad, asking how dare he contest the election against the Awami League.
The commission under these circumstances decided to instruct the local upazila election officer to file a complaint against Liton Sarkar with the Judicial Magistrate Court for violating the electoral code of conduct, the letter added.
Debidwar Upazila Election Officer Faruk Hossain said: "We received the letter on Friday morning. We have spoken to senior officials. We are preparing for the complaint."
