Law minister clarifies comments on Sagar-Runi case

Law Minister Anisul Huq explained that a debate had erupted over his comment on journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case on Friday.

“Even if it takes 50 years to catch those who have actually committed this crime, we will take the time to catch the culprits,” he said at Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura. 

He added that people misinterpreted that it would actually take 50 years.

Responding to a question as to why the probe into the journalist couple Sagar-Runi murders has not finished in 12 years, he said on Thursday that an investigation might linger when it comes to identifying the real culprit.  

He went on to say: “My point is that there should be a fair investigation to find the true culprit. Our legal framework states that anyone who is not a criminal cannot be harassed. The true criminal should be apprehended.”

In response to the question whether Sagar-Runi case investigation is slow or not, the law minister said: “There are many such cases in the world which I was referring to through my point. In the UK after 42 years, some accused were caught. A few days ago, the mystery of a murder case was revealed after 24 years in the United States.”

Anisul Huq said: "Police are trying to deal with this case. Their investigation is ongoing as they haven't nabbed the real culprit yet. That is why the investigation is taking time and will continue until the culprit is caught.”
