In Jessore's Sharsha and Benapole, the price of onions has increased by Tk20-30 taka per kg over a span of three days.
Local sources report that lower supplies and limited imports have led to this increase.
Three days ago, onions in markets across Benapole, Sharsha, Navaran, and Bagachara were cheaper, with domestic onions selling for Tk110-120 per kg and Indian onions for Tk80-90 per kg.
Now, local onions are selling for Tk150 per kg and Indian onions for Tk110-120 per kg.
Traders claim that the lack of onion imports from India via Benapole and a halt in imports and exports in Satkhira’s Bhomra port due to C&F agent elections are affecting prices.
Onion sellers Arif Hossain said: “Prices are rising at wholesale markets, which is affecting local prices, and there's a supply shortage.”
He said that supply suddenly decreased, causing the price hike.
Traders expect prices to fall once the new Murikata onions enter the market.
Mamun Kabir Torofdar, Benapole land port director (Traffic) noted that onions haven't been imported from India through Benapole for a long time, as importers are using other ports due to high transportation costs.
