Beijing says it firmly supports Dhaka in implementing its political agendas per its law

China has congratulated Bangladesh on the successful holding of its 12th general election as planned and felicitated the Awami League for winning the election, saying it is ready to work with the new government for greater progress.

"As an amicable and close neighbour of Bangladesh, China firmly supports Bangladesh in implementing the political agendas in accordance with its law after the election," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said.

"Based on the principles of mutual respect, equal footing, mutual benefit and non-interference in other country’s internal affairs, China is prepared to work with the new government of Bangladesh to carry forward the long-established friendship, further promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and pursue greater progress for China-Bangladesh strategic partnership of cooperation."

Awami League secured a landslide victory in Sunday’s election.

Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen called on Awami League chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday at her official residence, Ganabhaban, and congratulated her on the victory.

The new MPs will be sworn in on Wednesday.
