Bail applied after remand period
A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered to send the five lawyers in remand to jail in the case filed at Shahbag police station in connection with the violence in the Supreme Court Bar Association elections.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury gave this order after the hearing on Tuesday afternoon.
The lawyers who were sent to jail are Mohammad Osman Chowdhury, Kazi Bashir Ahmed, Md Enamul Hossain Sumon, Md Hasanuzzaman Tushar and Md Tariqul Islam.
After the three-day remand, the investigating officer of the case, Detective Branch Inspector Abul Kalam, produced the five lawyers in the court and applied for detention in jail.
At that time, their lawyers asked for bail which the state opposed. After the hearing of both the parties, the court ordered to send them to jail without granting the bail application.
Nizam Uddin, sub-inspector of the General Registration Branch of the concerned Shahbag police station, confirmed the information.
Earlier, Assistant Attorney General Saifur Rahman Siddiqui filed the case with Shahbagh police station on Friday.
He accused 20 lawyers, including newly elected Secretary of SCBA Nahid Sultana Juthi and BNP-backed secretary candidate Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajol.
Another 30-40 unidentified people were also accused in the case.
On Friday, vote counting in the SCBA election was halted following the clash.
On March 9, the day after the filing of the case, the court ordered the remand of these five lawyers for three days.
