Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that the people of Bangladesh will benefit from the magisterial powers granted to commissioned officers of the Bangladesh Army.

He made these remarks at the basic training parade for the 40th BCS (Ansar) Cadre Officers and the 25th Batch (Male) Recruit Sepoy at the Bangladesh Ansar VDP Academy in Safipur, Gazipur, on Wednesday.

The adviser noted that the army has long been serving the public and maintaining law and order, adding that the magisterial powers were conferred to them to further support these efforts.

"Our law enforcement forces are short of manpower, and the army is stepping in to help fill this gap," he said.

Regarding police personnel who were absent from duty between August 1 and September 17, 2024, the adviser confirmed that those officers will not be allowed to re-join and will face legal and disciplinary actions.

"The number of absent policemen is insignificant, and those who failed to join were mostly involved in misdemeanours," he said, urging cooperation in arresting these individuals and bringing them to justice.

When asked about public concerns, Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd) emphasized that the Bangladesh Army is a people-friendly and well-disciplined force.

"The public should have no difficulty in communicating with or seeking assistance from the army," he assured.
