Time News Desk: Mymensingh experienced severely heavy rainfall of 378 millimeters in the 24 hours till 6:00 am today.
The rainfall was the second highest recorded in the country since independence, said Bazlur Rashid, a meteorologist of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Much of the divisional town was submerged, bringing woes to the residents.
The heavy downpour that started on Thursday will continue to prevail over Mymensingh and Sylhet districts on Saturday with slight to moderate rainfall likely to occur in Dhaka. The rain is expected to recede from Sunday.
Bazlur said that the key spell of the rain has already ended and it is at its last stage.
"Chattogram, Mymensingh, and Sylhet will experience heavy to moderate rainfall tomorrow [Saturday] with slight rainfall in Dhaka. It will then start receding in those areas. The rest of the country will see no rain by Monday," he said.
He said heavy rainfall occurs when the monsoon nears an end as at that time large clouds accumulate. The rainfall can go up to a maximum of 400 millimeters around the end phase of the monsoon.
On top of that, two low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal, coupled with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), caused the heavy rainfall, he added.
