Flood situation improves in Sylhet

Low-lying areas of Sylhet Sadar are still waterlogged 52.2mm of rainfall recorded in Sylhet in the last 24 hours
The overall flood situation in Sylhet is improving, despite light rain drenching the district on Tuesday.
The rivers' water in the district has started receding from 28 wards of Sylhet City Corporation. However, the low-lying areas of Sylhet Sadar are still waterlogged.
According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the Surma River was flowing 66cm above the danger level at Kanaighat point while Kushiyara River at Amalseed point was flowing 26cm above the danger level.
However, the water level in Surma River has come down to 1cm below the danger level at Sylhet point. The river was flowing 13cm above the danger level at Sylhet point on Tuesday.
Shah Sajib Hossain, assistant meteorologist at Sylhet met office, said 52.2mm rainfall was recorded in Sylhet in the last 24 hours till 6am on Tuesday.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Russel Hasan said though the overall flood situation has improved, the situation may worsen if heavy rains and a surge of upstream water start.
He said control rooms have been opened at district and upazila levels for the flood victims.
According to the deputy commissioner's control room, 7,39,362 people have been affected by floods in Sylhet district.
A total of 835 villages have been flooded. Currently, 6,558 people are staying in shelters. In all, 571 shelters have been opened.
